Dance Pavilion

Popular dance parties and other events were held on weekend afternoons and evening in this building with its 40’ X 60’ wooden dance floor.  The Colts Orchestra the Union Orchestra, The Sedgwick & Casey Orchestra, The Pope Band and Simonds Military Band were among bands that played here. Ragtime was a fad during the late 1890s and into the early 1900s. Waltzes, marches and two-step were some of the favorite dances. Music composed by Elzear “Zez” Confrey, Joe Whitbur, Scott Joplin  and Charles K. Harris were very popular. Songs such as After the Ball, Daisy Bell, The Cat Came Back and The Band Played on were heard throughout the woods of Suburban Park. Some of the Unionville High School graduation reception dances were also held at the dance pavilion. The Dance Pavilion was also used for temperance lectures and theatrical performances. After the park closed, the pavilion was converted to a summer cottage in 1907 by Mr. and Mrs. Carl H. Hillier. In 1925, it was winterized with a partial cellar and occupied year-round by Michael Hawley’s family until it was destroyed by a fire in the 1960s.
