Surrounded by huge rocks and trees, the ice cream parlor building was also known as the Pavilion Cafe. Park goers  brought their own picnic food in “the tins, baskets, and hampers” and ate on the grassy lawns or at wooden picnic tables in the meadow or under the pavilions roof. They could also purchase picnic food at the park, often catered by the Habensteins or Hackney’s. A typical lunch consisted of “milk, crullers, cupcakes, bananas, sandwiches”. At other times a “ham sandwich, a boiled egg, a cupcake, a doughnut, and a banana and milk or coffee “ would be served. Lemonade was one of the most popular drinks, and Besse’s ice cream delighted everyone. The cafe featured one of the first underground cold storage cellars used for refrigeration.
