The pond was named for the flat-bottomed, wooden boats commonly used during the late 1890s. Painted white with a thick black stripe along the rim, Suburban Park punts had a square-cut bow designed for shallow water. Renting a punt allowed visitors to take boat rides with their dates and families. In winter, the pond was used for ice skating as well as hockey games between Unionville and Farmington schools.
